How is anyone supposed to get any work done in today’s world?
There is just notifications upon notifications upon notifications.
The dinging is incessant.
If it’s not my work email, it’s the work instant message chat.
If it’s not my personal WhatsApp groups, it’s Facebook trying to win me back.
Like how are you supposed to concentrate with these continuous distractions?
Let me change tack and ask you this – what if on some level you wanted the phone to go off?
That somewhere deep down inside you, you crave a distraction.
Each phone comes with an off button and I don’t think it’s outlandish to say you could turn off the phone and yet most people don’t. In fact most people will have their phone right beside them on their desk.
Why?
Because there exists a delusion, that floats in the ether, that we can avoid discomfort.
So when faced with a smelly complex task, a small part of us wants an escape, and it inevitably arrives in the form of a distraction.
