It’s funny how much you can take language for granted.
You never consider how much you rely on road signs, food labels and instructions until you are in a foreign country.
Well at least that was the case 20 years ago.
Nowadays with access to the internet you need never encounter the foreign language.
But… if your phone dies, if Google maps stops working, if paying for something requires more than just handing over money you might as well be on another planet.
Are you buying the gluten free version?
Who knows!
Did you order the vegetarian dish?
We’ll just have to wait and see!
So to update my opening sentence:
It’s funny how much you can take language for granted but you’ll only realise just how much when you lose access to the internet.
