How long should I spend on it?

Stephen King has published 64 novels since 1974.

That’s 64 novels in 48 years giving us an average of a year and four months per book.

And so you might think if I want to write a great novel like Carrie or The Shining or Cujo I just have to spend a year and 4 months on it.

But to balance that out, a year and 4 months also brought us less popular books like Christine, Cycle of the Werewolf, and The Talisman.

Furthermore songs like Eminem’s Rap God and Bob Dylan’s Blowing in the wind were reportedly written in under ten minutes but Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah took 5 years and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody even longer with 6 years.

It appears there is no correlation between time put in and resonance with the audience.
