In a rare moment of madness I found myself watching the reality TV show Love Island. On this particular show, this very handsome lad Adam took out Kendall for a date, leaving Niall (Kendall’s previous coupling) to watch on and melt into a pool of jealous madness.
What happened next is what I find interesting.
It was clear from the beginning that Adam had gotten under Niall’s skin and he was definitely threatened. Then Kendall said she had a good time and that in Niall’s mind sealed his fate. He completely ignored the fact that Kendall was simply undecided and the fact that there was a huge opportunity for him to win her over.
Resigning himself to the fact that he had lost (when he hadn’t) he decided to reject Kendall before she could reject him and thereby pushing Kendall away from him and straight into Adam’s arms. It couldn’t have been easier for Adam.
So where did Niall go wrong?
He created a story in his mind and let his negative imagination run away with itself, thereby jumping to conclusions. He didn’t pay attention to reality, and remember to stay in the moment. He panicked.
What’s remarkable about this is that it all happened within the space of like 12 hours, but that’s how quick you can implode.
This is a great lesson to anyone with destructive tendencies and you can watch this painful moment on the ITV player I suspect.
The trick is to challenge those sabotaging thoughts and pay close attention to the facts and not to warp your reality. It means you become rattled less and much better at facing adversity.
Poor Niall, hopefully he learns his lesson from this.
