A committee was formed to come up with a new name for the latest village cake.
Brainstorming soon followed. As the committee couldn’t quite articulate what they wanted, they specified what they didn’t want. Avenues to avoid.
It was then decided that the committee would open it up to the wider group. It would be a great opportunity to improve the morale of the commoners. The committee would even make it a competition.
Soon enough names were flying in. Just as the committee felt that the competition was getting them closer to the perfect name.
The King had an idea for a name and he liked it. He liked it so much that he put a stop to the competition and awarded himself and his suggestion the winner. There was no consultation with the committee or recognition that King’s name disobeyed the committee’s list of don’ts.
Everyone in the committee agreed that the King’s suggestion was a bad idea and felt quite ticked off by the way the King pulled rank and dismissed both the competition and the committee. But no one said it. No one told the King what they really felt about it. That there was others with better ideas. Why? Because he’s the King.
Which is worse? The King thinking he’s infallible or the committee not having the courage to speak up against him?
