At lunch I asked my colleagues would they rather be Mourinho or Fergie. And the majority of them picked Fergie, I agree with them.
Both are successful managers but the biggest difference is the amount of time spent at clubs.
Sir Alex Ferguson spent 26 years at Manchester United, whether as Mourinho is known to have a 3 year cycle. A new club every 3 years, if that.
If you were being managed by these two men (separately) who are you more likely to believe when they talk about building for the future?
It would be Fergie wouldn’t it? Because it’s hard to believe someone wants to build for the long term when their past behaviour says otherwise.
So how does Mourinho convince you that he is here for the long term?
He could sign a long term contract.
He could buy a house in the local area.
He could have a mindset that isn’t focused on short term results but rather progress and growth.
Overall he has to show his commitment to the club for the long term in order to earn his players trust. Otherwise the players don’t see him as authentic and won’t buy into his plans.
