I was surprised to hear a local golf club was on the brink of bankruptcy.
I thought to myself:
“How could that be? They have tons of members and a huge membership fee, they must have extraordinary levels of income. How could it have gotten this bad?”
Then upon further rumination I came up with, in hindsight, an obvious answer.
Long term neglect.
I would venture that these financial problems are the outcome of years of avoiding problems and bad decisions.
That if we were to scrutinise the club’s past decision making we would see tons of squandered opportunities to follow the right path.
There would be a plethora of moments when someone could’ve stepped up and leaned into the problem but no one did, it was simply easier to just avoid it.
