In Carol Dweck’s book ‘Mindset’ she talks about the difference between a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset.
It’s a great book and well worth a read!
If you have read it then you already know what I’m talking about and if you haven’t read it by now, I shall attempt a small synopsis.
A fixed mindset means you view your abilities as rigid and unchangeable. You have strengths and you have weaknesses and there is not much you can do to change that.
‘I’m not a maths person’ is an example of what a fixed mindset person might say.
The growth mindset on the other hand means you believe all of your abilities have the potential to get better.
‘I’m not good at maths but I know I could get better if I put in more effort’ is an example of what a growth mindset person might say.
Dweck found that something as fundamental as your outlook can have a huge impact on your efficacy.
She also found that those who adopted the Growth mindset succeeded more and who could argue with that really?
The great news is that people are not assigned a mindset for life. You can change your mindset whenever you want. The only thing in your way is you.
