Pandora’s inbox

A work email inbox is kind of like Pandora’s box.

Once you open it all hell breaks loose.

And if you open it first thing in the morning you can wave goodbye to the rest of your day. Because unfortunately, all too often, letting your inbox lead the way means relinquishing control of your day.

Falling down the rabbit holes means being pulled in a hundred different directions, putting out countless fires, responding to colleagues and confirming details.

Email is deceptive in that it can definitely be justified as work but for the majority of us, it’s the easy, short term, never ending distraction and rarely important work.

Better I think to open Pandora’s box after you have spent a few hours hacking away at an important task. That way even if the rest of your day is swallowed up by email you progressed on something important.

But I need to check my email in case something urgent comes up!

If it was urgent would they call you?
