Nostalgia and familiarity

‘Nostalgia is powerful but familiarity breeds contempt’

That group over there, they like to play bridge every week and discuss the same three topics every week without fail. It doesn’t seem to bother its members that they have the same conversation 52 times in a year.

Now if you look off to the left you will see a group that obsess over the new. They crave novelty so much so that they are willing to sacrifice effectiveness to ensure they don’t do the same thing twice.

Whether as this group here is a hybrid. It contains members that would happily reminisce all day but it also contains those who get restless with familiarity. The group maintains an equilibrium by being nostalgic in new and interesting ways.

If you find yourself sick and tired of participating in the same conversation again and again then I think you should aim to create the hybrid group.

I think it’s possible to create quizzes and games that still reminisce but in a refreshing way.

That way everyone wins.

The group continues to delve into their favourite memories and you get to bring some innovation to proceedings.
