The group decided they aren’t doing birthday gifts anymore.
It was taking too much time, effort and money.
I think that’s a shame.
I think the gift is in the giving.
There is a great buzz to reminiscing about private jokes and brainstorming ways to reference them in gift form.
There is fantastic excitement in pushing the envelope with a risque present.
What I think may have happened with the group was that they felt obligated to get presents for everyone.
It must’ve been getting harder and harder to come up with new and interesting present ideas.
They may have even punted the brainstorming to take the easy way out and therefore there was less of a buzz when giving.
So yes I think gift giving can be annoying when it feels like something you have to do but it can also be a fantastic vehicle for fun, connection and creativity too.
