The curator is well informed and pulls from many different sources.

‘This is a creative exercise used by French artists’
But the curator is not a creator.
You could benefit from the impressive memory of a curator but odds are they can’t tell you why the technique/exercise works.
They just know it does.
The innovator isn’t bothered with memorisation.
The innovator is more concerned with forging her own path.
She wants to understand why something works and use it in a new way.
