I think a good portion of leadership is dealing with uncertainty.
When there is no map the leader comes in and says ‘that way!’.
When there is no instruction manual the leader sits down and says ‘ok here’s how we’re going to do it’.
I think it’s an amazing skill, because as with all uncertainty there’s a chance it might not work.
Although I think there is a time place for this action.
I think it’s invaluable when chaos surrounds a project.
When the group is plan-less.
But when the leader isn’t there and the group creates and starts implementing a plan themselves.
Then I think it’s a bad time for the leader to come in and point a new direction.
Because now it becomes a battle of egos.
“Well we’re already going this way”
“Yes but that’s the wrong way”
“How do you know?”
I think there’s less resistance and more following when you’ve got first movers advantage.
