As of today my Spotify tells me that the songs ‘Let it be’, ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Yesterday’ have over 371 million, 359 million and 330 million streams respectively.
Only one song from Paul McCartney’s latest album cracks his top 5 streamed solo songs.
And that particular version of the song was a remix by a younger artist Dominic Fike.
I’m sure Paul doesn’t need Spotify to tell him that his latest music doesn’t create the same hysteria as his Beatle music.
He probably knows that better than anyone.
One can only imagine the resistance his internal critic throws up whilst creating or even contemplating creating new music.
‘Don’t make another album, it’ll just be embarrassing’
‘Why are you doing this? You don’t need the money!’
‘You’ll never be able to emulate Hey Jude’
‘Your best is behind you’
And yet he continues to create new music.
Where many of his peers are content to play the old favourites for the rest of their days.
McCartney refuses to stop innovating.
In his late 70’s, potentially the richest musician in the world and he continues to grapple with his demons to create something new.
You’ve got to hand it to the man, that is amazing!
