My issue with morning pages is that I think they are not sufficient in themselves.
They lack a shipping element.
Without an audience interaction (or at least making it available for an audience) it’s simply a journalling exercise and if it’s a journalling exercise it’s something we can slack off on because there’s no accountability.
If you’re feeling lazy and it’s a private journal then ‘blah blah blah’ would suffice as today’s entry.
But if you had to read your journal entries out loud to a class full of people the fear of judgement would keep you honest and push you to write something more substantial than ‘blah blah blah’.
So I think the morning pages are good, I’ve certainly benefited from them but if we want to improve as writers I think the crucial habit is shipping your work.
