It’s a silly comedy set in Nazi Germany during the second world war and the main character is a young boy who believes all the Nazi propaganda and loves Hitler.
Now that sounds like a bad idea for a movie and yet JoJo Rabbit was an amazing film. Taika Waititi thread the needle between comedy and sadness beautifully and that’s not just my opinion. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 80% and IMDB gave it 7.9/10.
How about another one…
Boy and girl meet, they become friends, they start to develop romantic feelings for each other, they fear sex will ruin their relationship but they get over that and end up together.
That doesn’t sound like a particularly exciting movie either.
People who should be together end up together!
And yet ‘When Harry met Sally’ holds a special place in the hearts of all rom com lovers. That description also doesn’t do justice to the new years eve speech or the ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ scene.
Another one?
You spend the whole movie rooting for these two to get together and they end up making a whole song and dance about it but they finally become an item. Only for them to choose their careers over their relationship!
Like what’s that about?
Workaholics win in this modern world?!?
But the ending of La La Land was so much more than that. Despite the fact that they don’t end up together it felt like a happy ending.
In my opinion it wasn’t the initial concept but the execution that made these films great.
