Past Jupiter

There are movies that spoon-feed you the morale of the story.

Directors with a lesson they want to portray.

A change they want to provoke in the audience.

And then there is ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’.

Possibly the weirdest film I’ve ever seen.

It was progressing along fine, I was keeping up with the narrative, things were starting to heat up and then the spaceship gets past Jupiter.

And I’m absolutely transfixed.

Totally baffled by what I’m seeing but also completely engrossed.

What happens?

I couldn’t tell you!

What did all the visuals mean?

I haven’t the faintest idea.

All I know is that my confusion kept my eyes glued to the screen.

Perhaps that was Stanley Kubrick’s agenda.

To transfix.

Not to impart lessons on the best way to live but simply to resonate.

To provoke a strong reaction, with his art form.
