Retaining daily

I think companies only making an effort to retain employees when they hand in their notice is too little, too late.

Why?

Because so much effort goes into a job hunt!

It’s not a decision to be taken lightly.

These days some companies require 6 rounds of interviews before offering a position.

Most job hunts must take 6 weeks at minimum if companies are being that diligent.

So, your employee has decided for at least 6 weeks they are leaving and they’ve committed to this decision by spending time and effort working on their CV, researching their interviewers, preparing and rehearsing presentations, comparing different company benefits.

They’ve found a company they like, they’ve squealed in delight at getting the job offer, they hand in their notice and then you try and retain them!

For me a decision is best swayed when its in its infancy. Not when there has been six weeks of sunk costs.

People don’t like wasting sunk costs.

I think if you want to retain your employees it needs to be a daily effort, a regular occurrence that is baked into the system.

That way any thoughts of ‘this place is a prison‘ are nipped in the bud by a wellness retreat or a free smoothie.
