I think that one of the biggest reasons for not giving one’s opinion is:
It might lead to confrontation.
We don’t speak up because what if it offends someone and they want to argue with us.
So then we just stay quiet or agree with the general consensus.
And I think it doesn’t have to be so extreme.
I think a balance can be struck between giving your opinion and not stimulating confrontation.
Furthermore I believe the key to doing this is in the intent behind the expression.
If it’s obvious to the listener you are not looking to offend but merely putting your opinion forward then you can safely express your views without creating confrontation.
You may have to repeatedly display intent but I think this the essential tone to take.
I think biting your tongue and keeping your head down is not the answer.
In my opinion choosing to avoid voicing one’s view is to invite frustration and to accumulate resentment.
I think one would be better off trying to find that sweet spot of expressing views with obvious intent.
But that’s just my opinion 😛
