Yesterday I was making a video and I wanted a shot of me hitting the camera with a rugby ball from 50 yards away.
I must’ve made somewhere in the region of 30-50 attempts.
There were some beautiful kicks with textbook technique that came so close, but no cigar and there were some awful shanks.
Eventually, after quitting a few times, I got the shot.
But the attempt that knocked over the camera was a terrible kick, it was only a lucky bounce of the ball at the last moment that saved it.
I thought to myself, it’s funny it was that one, there were so many more deserving kicks that missed.
‘Deserving’
I remember my rugby coach in school reminiscing about past teams he had the privilege to guide.
He told us the best team he ever coached didn’t win the senior cup. Furthermore other teams, less ‘deserving’ teams, ended up with silverware.
The winner at the end of a sports game is the one with the most points, it doesn’t matter what happened before the final whistle or who supposedly ‘deserved it’ more. You just have to satisfy that one requisite.
That kick may not have looked pretty but it got the job done.
They have to crown someone a winner every year, whether they ‘deserved’ it or not.
