In the hero story template, the hero meets a mentor, upskills with the mentor and then the mentor steps aside or passes on leaving the hero to face their challenge all by themselves.
Which makes a lot of sense to me. After all, with the mentor and their superior capabilities around, the hero is surplus to requirements.
There’s no need for Luke to step up and save the galaxy if Obi Wan is there.
‘Eh we don’t need you Harry to defeat Voldemort, we’ve got Dumbledore.’
There would be no demand for Simba to face Scar if Mufasa was still alive.
Either willingly or unwillingly the mentor leaves the hero to fend for themselves, because ultimately, that is where all the juicy personal growth and character development comes from.
