Responsibility and autonomy

I think micromanagement could make the cushiest job in the world a living hell and autonomy and responsibility could make the least wanted jobs attractive.

That’s how important I think certain work methods are.

You could be earning a million a year, only working 5 hours a week but quitting could be a viable option because those 5 hours a week are torturous.

You’re not allowed to think for yourself, you have to shut up and follow instructions and everything you do is wrong anyway, whether you comply or not.

It’s an exaggerated salary and workload but I bet the thought of quitting will cross your mind.

But then consider the humble rubbish collector who is given sufficient responsibility and allowed total autonomy over his methods.

Yes he has to work longer for less but his boss doesn’t breathe down his neck every two seconds.

I think if these two fictional workers could meet, I think the millionaire would be jealous of the bin man’s set up.

So yes I’ve used exaggerated cases but I think an employee’s job happiness depends heavily on such simple things as responsibility and autonomy.

An option available to every micromanager if only they can relinquish control. To overcome their fear and tackle the unhelpful thought that they have to do everything themselves.

A little freedom can go a long away.

It has the power to increase staff morale, reduce recruitment costs, increase productivity and reduce stress.
