Autonomy in creativity

You watch on in horror as your masterpiece is torn to shreds.

The committee makes sure that they systematically strip your work of any personality.

They sand off the edges and round off all the corners.

When they are finally done, the piece barely resembles your meticulously crafted prose and a tiny part of you dies inside.

It is for this exact reason that I think autonomy, freedom and self directed projects are crucial to creativity.

When you are the sole approver you don’t have to kill your darlings, you can include all the parts you love.

The controversial comments. The risque jokes.

The more the merrier!

If you don’t have to follow disagreeable directions then pride in your work flourishes. Not to mention joy, fun and the feeling of being alive.

So, if writing for the corporate world is getting you down, then I’d recommend starting your own personal blog.

It’s much more fun!
